Global Industry Sales of Semiconductors

The United States dominated the semiconductor industry until the 1980s, holding a 60% share of global sales in the early part of that decade. However, by the 2010s, its share had dropped to about 20%, while Asia's share surged from 10% to nearly 70%, according to the U.S.-based Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Asia surpassed the Americas in semiconductor sales in 1985, with China overtaking in the 2010s.

By 2023, semiconductor sales figures were as follows:

- China: $157 billion

- Americas (primarily the U.S.): $134 billion

- Rest of Asia: $187 billion

- Europe: $56 billion

The Americas' share of the global semiconductor market grew from 22.0% in 2018 to 25.6% in 2023. Conversely, China's share decreased from 35% in 2019-2021 to 29.9% in 2023. Estimates for 2024 suggest that U.S. semiconductor sales might match China's.

The United States is now actively working to boost its domestic production and reinforce its standing in the semiconductor sector.
