The Shale Revolution's Impact on the U.S. Economy: Transforming Seven Decades of Energy Deficit into an Era of Energy Surplus Since 2019

After two decades of growth, U.S. energy imports declined by 37% from 2007 to 2023, while energy exports surged by 452%. As a result, the energy trade balance shifted from a deficit of -29.3 quadrillion BTU in 2007 to a record surplus of +7.8 quadrillion BTU in 2023.
